Synopsis,The war in former Yugoslavia serves as a backdrop to the ethnic clash between a Serbian and a Kosovar family in the Bronx circa 1999. Once best friends, the guilt of families left behind in their war-torn homeland and a threatened sense of ethnic identity lead Mirosh, a Kosovar immigrant, and Gregor, a Serbian immigrant, to play out the ethnic conflict with each other in their new homeland. Mirosh’s daughter, Lily, works in his corner market with her dutiful sister, Dina, who was born back in Kosova. Unbeknownst to both families, Lily and Kosta, Gregor’s son, are hiding a romance from their embittered families. When Kosta tries to enter Mirosh’s store to veil briefly seeing Lily, Mirosh throws him out, reminding him that he and his Serbian father are unwelcome in his presence. That night Kosta and Lily sneak out together, sharing the frustrations of their hidden relationship and less than ideal family lives. In a bold move, Kosta asks her to run away with him and Lily agrees. But before they can celebrate the idea of a new life together, two local Kosovar kids, Arben and Besnik see them together and challenge Kosta to a fight. To Lily’s horror, Kosta pulls out a knife and the kids run off, but Lily’s reaction forces Kosta to reluctantly promise getting rid of the knife. The next day, before Kosta’s plan to escape with Lily is set in motion, Mirosh discovers their relationship from Arben and Besnik at the store. In a fit of rage, he storms over to Gregor’s building and challenges him to a street fight. In this final confrontation, the fate of both families becomes inextricably tied together by the very violence they had fled from in former Yugoslavia. .
